the Mom Chronicles

I'm working on an embroidered silhouette of this photo right now, which includes Mar's glasses.

my mom (second from left) and her best gals from high school, sometime in the 80s, stolen from my parents' archives

I've spoken my thoughts on family photo albums and the importance of documentation before. They matter. In fact, I think they are the best. Compositionally, this particular photo is pretty straightforward. It says: They're friends! They enjoy each other's company. They share bright colors and haircuts. They're posing to remember those times!

But, since it's a photo of my mother and the women who took care of me in quiet, important ways while I was growing up, who showed me the beauty of lifelong friendships between women and laughing a whole lot and how you're supposed to wear a floral print, I analyze it a lot more. I want to know everything! Did my dad take the photo? What did he say to make them laugh? What's happening in their lives? Their careers?

Are they like us?

these four, 2010

Probably. That's the coolest.
